Getting You Started – New Clerks
When is this held?
This session is not held at regular intervals, but organised when there are several new Clerks in need of this training. So, if you would like us to put one in the schedule please contact sue@haptc.org.uk
Who should attend?
This course is designed for Clerks and assistant/deputy clerks only. We recommend that clerks attend this session as soon as possible after appointment, however it is useÂful to anyone who has been in post for less than a year. A friendly and supportive sesÂsion, it will give you the reassurance that you understand the part you play in the council and what tools exist to help you with your role.

Session Overview:
This informal, small-group session gives new and inexperienced clerks an introduction to some of the key aspects of the role. It highlights many support mechanisms and signposts for further information. Just bring yourself and any questions you may already have! Topics covered:
- Information and help about council policies and procedures, meetings, agendas, minutes
- role of Councillors and responsibilities of the Chairmen
- employment matters
- introduction to legislation
- things to do before, during and after meetings
- council finance
- sharing initial experiences, problem-solving and trouble shooting, signposts and support, recommended publications, jargon
- CiLCA

- The essential paperwork
- What you need to know about now
- What happens in the next 12 months
- Local council language
- What support and development is available
